Unfortunately, a lot of small businesses and new brands don’t think of cybersecurity beyond compliance. Yes, compliance does matter, and it is absolutely necessary to focus on necessary rules & regulations, but the relevance of cybersecurity extends beyond that. Today, businesses operate in a hybrid environment. From using software like Genetec for their IP cameras, to storing data on both cloud and on-premise solutions, everything is heterogenous. Securing your business againstcybersecurity concerns is not complicated, as long as you follow some of the basic steps listed below.

  1. Secure passwords. Password protection is an aspect you cannot afford to ignore. Ensure that all default passwords are changed immediately, and create strong, long passwords. Make sure that special characters, numbers, uppercase & lowercase letters are included. If your employees are not using a password management tool as yet, it is time to suggest the right options.
  2. Focus on network security and scanning. Finding security flaws and fixing them in time is the core aspect of managing cybersecurity. You can have scheduled scans, focus on special tools and features, like network segmentation, and can even engage a team of ethical hackers.
  3. Take backups. In case of a security breach, your company should be able to restore systems and network assets right away, for which backups are necessary. Backups can be scheduled periodically, and the data can be stored safely for future use, if needed. With cloud solutions, this doesn’t have to be hard.
  4. Take the basic steps. Make sure that networked devices are placed behind firewalls, and all software and firmware must be updated to the latest version. Ensure that employees are taking enough steps to avoid unwanted downloads, and under no circumstances, one should use pirated software. Operating Systems must be updated regularly too.
  5. Create a cybersecurity plan. What are the protocols that managers must follow in case of a malware attack? Do you have a system for access management? What are some of the other cybersecurity concerns that are specific to your business? Having a clear plan for both preventing and managing incidents is necessary.

Final word

Cybersecurity requires continuous understanding of new threats and taking proactive measures. If required, engage experts for your cybersecurity policies and measures, and get your people trained, because they are on the frontline of managing security of assets, devices and data. Their actions determine how fairly your company performs with cybersecurity and related aspects.
